The Orcia doc denomination was born in 2000, undoubtedly the undisputed main element of the Orcia wine is Sangiovese, the most common black grape variety in Tuscany, whose name is historically thought to mean "blood of Jupiter".
Sangiovese has a particular versatility, it can give life to extremely fine and long-lived wines, but also to less demanding products, sparkling and passito wines.
The production area of Orcia Doc is between that of Brunello di Montalcino and Nobile di Montepulciano and includes 12 municipalities in the area indicated above.
The wine acquires the ORCIA denomination if Sangiovese is present at least at 60% plus other non-aromatic grape varieties indicated by the Tuscany region, entering the market on March 1st following the harvest.
L'Orcia RISERVA is the Orcia wine aged no less than 24 months of which at least 12 in wooden barrels, while the ORCIA SANGIOVESE foresees the presence of the grape variety at least 90%, if this is aged for at least 30 months, of which at least 24 in wooden barrels, has the right to the name ORCIA SANGIOVESE RISERVA.
To these denominations are added ORCIA ROSATO with Sangiovese at least 60%, ORCIA BIANCO with Trebbiano at least 50% and, finally, ORCIA VIN SANTO WITH Tuscan Trebbiano and long white Malvasia, in the latter case the consumption takes place after 1st November of the third year following the production of the grapes.
